MUSICAL WORKS BY JUAN DE ANCHIETA
The accurate identification of Juan de Anchieta’s musical creations could be likened to an ongoing and perpetual “work in progress.” This is due to the dispersion and diversity of sources that have persisted over 500 years since his passing. The recent scholarly investigations into his life and artistic output contribute to the challenge of constructing a comprehensive catalog of his body of work. Frequently, his compositions lack clear authorial markings, and there is no shortage of different attributions to the same work. This phenomenon elucidates why editions spanning the 20th century display shifting attributions and reattributions to diverse compositions, resulting in a fluctuating count of works, albeit always a modest one, contingent upon the preferences of various publishers.
For the development of this section of the website, it has been decided to adhere to the “Anchieta worklist” framework, meticulously formulated and developed by the esteemed musicologists Tess Knighton and Kenneth Kreitner in 2019 as part of their authoritative monograph, “The Music of Juan de Anchieta.” This choice is grounded in its up-to-date nature and its foundation in a thorough reassessment of primary sources. Knighton and Kreitner’s categorization divides Anchieta’s compositions into three distinct groups: “Works of Undoubted Attribution,” “Works of Probable Attribution,” and “Works of Doubtful Attribution.”
